How to Choose the Right 2-Pin Magnetic Connector

A 2-pin magnetic connector carries positive and ground in a single, self-aligning module. It’s the simplest configuration for DC charging, sensor power, and low-voltage delivery. Use the steps below to lock in your current rating, environmental tolerance, and housing geometry before requesting samples.

  1. Match the rated current to your charge or load profile. Our standard 2-pin parts handle 1A, 2A, or 3A per contact at 12V. Pick the rating closest to your peak draw and add headroom for inrush current. Higher-current variants are available on request for fast-charge applications.
  2. Verify contact resistance against your power-loss budget. Standard 2-pin connectors hold contact resistance at 30 mΩ or below per pin. At 2A, that translates to roughly 0.12W per contact — low enough to avoid measurable heating in most consumer applications. Tighter resistance is available when needed.
  3. Confirm the polarity layout works with your PCB design. A 2-pin connector enforces orientation through magnet polarity. Decide early whether you need a fixed-polarity layout or a symmetrical design that lets the user mate either way. We can flip magnet orientation during custom design.
  4. Check the temperature and humidity range. Standard 2-pin parts run from –35°C to +105°C, which covers most automotive, outdoor, and industrial environments. Humidity tolerance covers 10%RH to 90%RH. For sealed or waterproof builds, ask about IP-rated variants.
  5. Confirm the mechanical life rating fits your duty cycle. Standard 2-pin connectors are rated for 10,000 mating cycles. That’s roughly nine years of use at three cycles per day. Wearables that charge daily fit well inside that budget; high-duty industrial uses may need an extended cycle rating.
  6. Pick the magnet grade and housing footprint. The N52 magnet in our standard 2-pin parts provides strong holding force in a compact package. We adjust magnet size, polarity, and housing diameter to match wearable straps, charging docks, and slim enclosures. Send us a 3D model and we’ll match the envelope.
  7. Confirm plating, materials, and certifications. Standard contacts use Gold plating over a copper alloy. Promax holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and IECQ QC080000, and all 2-pin connectors are RoHS-compliant. Let us know if you need a thicker plating or specific material certifications.

2-Pin Magnetic Connector FAQs

What’s the standard voltage and current rating for a 2-pin magnetic connector?

Our standard 2-pin magnetic connectors are rated 12V at 2A per contact, with options at 1A and 3A. For higher current or voltage, we customize the contact diameter, plating, and housing to meet the target spec.

Can a 2-pin magnetic connector carry data as well as power?

Yes, but it’s usually overkill. A 2-pin layout is best for DC power. If you need data lines alongside power, a 3-pin or 4-pin magnetic connector is a better fit. Our engineers will recommend the right pin count based on your application.

How does the connector enforce correct polarity?

The two magnets are polarized so the connector only mates one way. That prevents reverse-polarity damage to your charging circuit. If you need a symmetrical design, we can adjust magnet orientation during custom design.

What’s the operating temperature range?

Standard 2-pin connectors run from –35°C to +105°C. That’s a wider range than most of our other magnetic connectors and works well in automotive, outdoor, or industrial applications. Tighter or wider ranges are available on request.

How many mating cycles before contact resistance drifts?

Standard 2-pin parts hold contact resistance below 30 mΩ across 10,000 mating cycles. Plating thickness drives long-term resistance stability. We extend the cycle rating during custom design when needed.

What’s the minimum order quantity for a custom 2-pin design?

We support low-MOQ prototype runs for qualification and scale to production volumes in the same ISO 9001-certified facility. Send your annual forecast with the quote request and we’ll match the tooling tier.

How fast can I get samples?

Free samples ship within two weeks of an approved design. Catalog parts like the NF6266-02PA or NC4710-02PA ship in a few days. Mass production runs 3–4 weeks after sample approval.
