How to Choose the Right 6-Pin Magnetic Connector

A 6-pin magnetic connector handles multi-line designs that need more than a 4-pin layout — multi-channel audio, redundant power rails, or extended sense and ID paths. It strikes a balance between pin density and housing size. Use the steps below to lock in your spec before sample request.

1. Plan the six-pin layout against your signal map. Common configurations split as two power pins, two data pairs, and one ground or ID line. Audio applications run separate left, right, and mic channels with shared ground. Tell us the pin map and we’ll match contact pitch and shielding.
2. Match the current rating to your peak load. Standard 6-pin parts handle up to 3A per contact at 12V. Two power pins in parallel deliver 6A total. For higher-current designs, we adjust contact diameter and plating during custom builds.
3. Verify spring force against your mating-force budget. Our 6-pin parts ship with 80 gf ± 20% spring force per contact. That’s enough to maintain stable contact resistance under vibration but low enough that mating feels smooth. Adjustable spring force is available for high-vibration or low-insertion-force builds.
4. Confirm contact resistance for power and signal paths. Standard 6-pin connectors hold contact resistance at 50 mΩ or below per pin. That keeps voltage drop minimal at 3A on the power side and maintains signal integrity on the data and audio lines.
5. Check the temperature and humidity range. Standard 6-pin parts run from –25°C to +85°C across 10%RH to 90%RH. That covers most consumer, smart-home, and indoor industrial applications without a custom build. Extended-temperature variants are available for outdoor builds.
6. Confirm the mechanical life rating fits the duty cycle. Standard 6-pin connectors are rated for 10,000 mating cycles. For smart locks, charging docks, or audio accessories, that covers nine years at three mates per day. Higher cycle ratings are available during custom design.
7. Pick the magnet grade, plating, and certifications. The N52 magnet provides strong holding force in compact housings. Standard contacts use Gold plating over a copper alloy. Promax holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and IECQ QC080000, and all 6-pin parts are RoHS-compliant.
